A New Musical Cabaret Presented by Theatreroo
Utopia: The Amazing Australian–Paraguayan Story
A true story of hope, courage, and the dream of a fairer world — brought to life through song, dance, and powerful storytelling.
UTOPIA is a vibrant new musical that celebrates this little-known but astonishing chapter of Australian history —
a dream of community, hope, and transformation.

At the end of the 19th century, Australia was in crisis. Depression and mass unemployment swept the country, and hope was in short supply. But a bold group of idealists imagined something extraordinary.
Led by the charismatic writer and orator Billy Lane, they journeyed halfway across the world to Paraguay to build a utopian Socialist society — a new world founded on equality, cooperation, and shared purpose.
Among the group were remarkable and inspiring figures:
- Dave Stevenson, cousin of famed novelist Robert Louis Stevenson
- Mary Cameron, who would later become Dame Mary Gilmore, now remembered on Australia’s ten-dollar note
Music & Style
The score of UTOPIA is as rich and varied as the journey itself.
With toe-tapping songs and heartfelt storytelling, ‘Utopia’ explores the power of community, resilience, and hope. As the characters navigate challenges and celebrate their differences, they inspire audiences to embrace change and believe in a brighter tomorrow.
Audiences will be carried from:
- Australian bush ballads of the outback,
- to romantic melodies of longing and belonging,
- to fiery Spanish dance rhythms that evoke the heat, colour, and passion of South America.
It is storytelling through song, heart, and movement — told in bold cabaret form.
